why do soccer (futbol) fans from other countries blow little horns during the game, nonstop?

I don't know why, but I'm watching the US get their butts kicked by Brazil.

I'm nearly ready to stab a hot skewer through my ear canals, however, because of these darn soccer fans blowing horns incessently.

Why do they do it? Where did it start? Is there a pattern or tradition with it? Do they play songs or just blow like idiots?

I must say the tone of the comments are unkind but it doesn't faze!

The reason behind the vuvuzela is the 12th man (ask Egypt), it is done to show support and it started in South Africa. The is a rhythm that is followed but no song as such.

It has evolved from the Kudu horn which is also blown and featured prominently at Orlando Pirates FC games nicknamed the Bucs(hence).

Word of advice, you haven't heard nothing yet , wait till South Africa take on Spain in Bloemfontein the home of Bloemfontein Celtic FC. The 12th man for sure will push for victory ! Guaranteed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you've probably been watching the Confederations Cup in South Africa. Those horns the fans are blowing are called "Vuvuzelas".. and in the Zulu language it's translated as "making noise". It doesn't happen in every country but they use them alot during South African league games. It's part of their football culture down there so get used to it because it's becoming popular and you will hear them a lot next summer especially seeing as how according to reports many teams and players participating in the Confed Cup right now...particularly Xabi Alonso of Spain find it annoying.

It's just that they're being given all of these annoying plastic horns. They're being encouraged to do so. It's a nightmare. But oh well, it kind of just fades to white noise eventually. You'll get used to it ;)

I'm starting to think that, as the guy above me pointed out, that SA citizens are just a bunch of, er, slightly stupid folk who if you give a horn they'll blow into for 90 minutes straight like a bunch of 'tards.

I agree, it drives me potty too. I don't know why they can't sing and chant like they do in civilized European countries.
