When watching David Beckham, Henry and the other superstars play in MLS you think that entire US knows them and who they are. But is that really the case? Does americans even watch soccer. (I've heard that It's a growing sport)

It is the 5th most popular sport in the USA, but soccer can easily past hockey as America's 4th most popular within 10-20 years.
1.Hockey has lockouts, which is killing the league/sport.
2.Not many people can play hockey because it can be expensive to play.
If soccer can market themselves to all of America, then they can past hockey because Hockey doesn't do well in Southern USA.
Yes, some Americans do watch soccer, but it is a minority compared to other sports leagues. NBC has a deal with MLS, so there is room for national broadcast. It is growing. Youth Soccer is one of the most played sports in the USA behind American Football i believe, so I guess within a generation. there will be a huge boost in popularity.

It is not a major spectator sport in the United States, but I believe that it is a major sport that people play for fun. In my little town in Texas there are tons of people that play or referee soccer (almost all). I referee soccer and love the sport! On any give weekend I am refereeing 6 or 7 youth games and 3 or 4 adult games. Another thing is just going out to a field and playing happens a lot. Now this may be just because of the Hispanic influence in Texas over the past several years, but I know everyone around here loves to play it. But as far as watching it not many people do yet, but over the last couple of years I've been seeing a lot of European soccer games being broadcasted in English on our major television channels. So that is a growing audience too

It is definitely a growing sport. Certainly not everyone would know Thierry Henry's name over here but the sport is gathering momentum. A lot of americans do watch soccer but even we tend to watch the EPL more than we watch MLS.

Unfortunately soccer is not a big sport in the u.s, people tend to like sports that seem to not do anything but, stand around looking at eachother, with only seconds of ball play.(football, baseball) the game could last 2hrs and still only get 10mins of ball interaction, they say it's fun especially when you are drinking which tells me how boring and depressing it must be.
Soccer will never be popular in the u.s even though there's more movement in the game the low scores is not popular among Americans that's why in football touch downs are worth a mysterious 7 points like that it won't look to bad in the scoreboard.
Who is Beckham?

Yes you are correct, the sport is growing. In the U.S. I honestly think that the us womens national team is the most popular team here(in the u.s.) Sure its not as popular as most(including myself) would want it to be but its definitely grown an incredible amount since 2000 or even 2010.

Youth level - huge // but it hasn't transcended into a "feeder" in most regions for a growing foundation of fans. In the Pacific Northwest, MLS has a solid following -- but it has to be considered a niche sport in most areas. The financial implosion of a number of pro indoor leagues is another sign of niche over foundation.

We don't know who they are. We don't even watch. Children play it in school. Adult Americans watch football, baseball, hockey. Big network TV doesn't broadcast soccer.
